A Chat with Wesley Verhoeve and a Look at His New Book, "NOTICE Journal, Volume One"
A photographer's foray into bookmaking and artistic exploration.
Hi, and welcome to my little Substack corner. I write about photography, art, design, and the craft of living creatively. I am glad you are here. Consider subscribing to keep up with what I am doing. I promise not to bore you. If you would like to support my efforts, that would be amazing and so appreciated. Either way, I am super happy you are here.
Happy Sunday to everyone.
I was just surfin’ around one day and found a book of photography by photographer Wesley Verhoeve. The title was “NOTICE” and the work was just the kind of thing I love to see.
I was as impressed by the work as I was the way he had presented every facet of the making of the book.
From the shooting to the editing to selecting the colors for the cover, Wesley took us along in the journey so we had a sense of excitement as it built to actually being printed and sold.
I bought a copy, and I love it.
Indie publishing of small-run books is something I am very attracted to. I have nearly two dozen short-run books that most people will never get to enjoy, sadly, but I will.
I think of the books as art. A collectible piece of art.
Wesley and I had a nice chat last week, and I want to share that video with you all today.
The new book is a set of Diptychs taken together on a half-frame Olympus Pen camera. The pairings are done in camera, so there is a lot of thoughtful work in the image creation.
From Wesley’s Substack post we get a glimpse of the pairings in the book.
Wesley’s new book comes out today and is available for pre-order here:
In the video, Wesley Verhoeve discusses his photography journey, focusing on his self-published book "Notice." He shares insights on capturing beauty in everyday surroundings during the pandemic while walking in Vancouver. The conversation also touches on his upcoming book, which explores themes of connection and storytelling through paired images, emphasizing the art of photography and bookmaking.
Take some time and watch/listen to the discussion, and then take a look at Wesley’s website for more imagery.
And if you want a wonderful piece of art, consider purchasing a copy before the pre-sale runs out.
When you are ready, here is how I can help you succeed.

Excellent talk, thank you Don and Wesley.
For me I get into this technical side of the commercial work and need remind my big dumb self, hey this is also art! Go outside and walk around and see cool stuff!! Right? Yes I believe commercial art can be ‘art’ —is what have based my career upon. However, what Wesley is doing here IS Art, the emotion, the transformation, the journey—photography is simply the medium used to process that emotional and very personal journey.
Beautiful work.
The book making topic I could write pages about :-) What Wesley is doing, the whole process is hard to put into words and perspective but Wesley has done a great job. Kudos and cannot wait to receive my copy of the book!
I had such a great time chatting Don! Thank you!
