Along 177, And the View from Pinal Pass. Also a Little Salesy Thing for the Product Class
I try not to do a lot of salesy-sales posts, but I have four openings left.
Hi, and welcome to my little Substack corner. I write about photography, art, design, and the craft of living creatively. I am glad you are here. Consider subscribing to keep up with what I am doing. I promise not to bore you. If you would like to support my efforts, that would be amazing and so appreciated. Either way, I am super happy you are here.
One of my favorite small road trips is from my home in the east valley to the 60, then up to Superior, over to Winkleman on the 177, and then down to Globe on the 77, and back to Superior and home.
Superior is an old mine town that is slowly coming back to life, and full of textures, color, and uniquely interesting places.
Standing in silent guard to Superior is Picketpost Mountain. Huge, mysterious, and a wonderful place for hiking if you have a full day.
We usually get lunch in Superior, but this time we headed up 177 toward Winkleman, another old mining town that sits at a crossroads.
177 is a rollercoaster ride. Lots of curves, and three 10% grades that tumble down the sides of mountains toward deep valleys only to go up to another high pass.
I love this road; in a car, but even more on a motorcycle.
Along the way we get to see some of the Ray Mine, which covers thousands of acres. The piles of discarded rocks are colorful from all the different strata in the rocks they are mining.
When you leave Winkleman going north to Globe (on Highway 77), you will follow the Gila River. It used to be a large river, but most of the summer it is dry.
This time, however, there is a bit of water in it.
At one point along Highway 77, you come to the top of Pinal Pass. The view from that point is simply astounding. However, I have never been there when the wind wasn’t blowing at hurricane levels and this time it was super cold as well.
Next week I am off to Moab for some more fun. We expect snow in parts of Escalante, and we are super excited to be on the road again.
See you next time.
Now for the salesy-sales thing.

Hello Don, I signed up for your Table Top course last night (2/18/25). It’s the first paid course I’ve signed up for with you. It sounds like I should be on the lookout for an email with a zoom link to a Facebook page. I haven’t yet seen a link email or confirmation. I wonder if you could point me in the right direction. Thanks!
Its on my agenda for my next trip to Tucson!. Thanks for posting.!
