I'd like to add that partnering with trusted people that have compatible and complementary skills may also help when the gap to cross in order to aquire a specific skill set is too wide for an individual.
I am not a "video" shooter, although I shoot a lot of 'clips".
But if a clent needed a video (with audio and such), I would hire a video and audio team to shoot it, get it done for my client, and take my cut as a producer. I also know a guy here in Phoenix who is a full on ad agency, and all of his productions is handled by freelancers.
