Really interesting read. Thanks for drawing that clever parallel between Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen critiques and photography feedback!
The idea of being honest but helpful (using criticism as a tool for growth) is so crucial. I tried something similar recently: I delivered clear, no‑nonsense notes on a friend’s landscape shots, focusing on lighting and framing, and it completely changed her next set. Do you find this approach also works well with clients, or is it better reserved for fellow creatives?
I think that if I am honest with my criticisms of client's work, it is a bellweather of how I can work with them.
If they are defensive, argumentative, or claims their failed bullshit is great and it is their customers who need to step up, I know it is not a match for me. I would be a glorified 'content' creator. I cannot think of a more horrible fate.
If they listen, ask questions, and are at least open to looking at another way of going, then I am inspired to keep with it, and offer solutions that will help them.
Life is too short to be wasted on a fool.
And if you do work with someone who fights changing their losing ways, you will be blamed for their failure.

Guaranteed.
